Taipei, Dec. 22 (CNA) A police operation to arrest a fugitive that turned into a nearly 21-hour hostage situation ended in the southern Taiwan city of Taitung Tuesday afternoon with no casualties.

The armed fugitive, surnamed Lin, released the remaining one of the three hostages he had held since Monday evening at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and surrendered himself to police.

Lin took three university students hostage in a house close to his hideout after escaping when police tried to arrest him for a suspected robbery, but two of the hostages were released a couple of hours later.

During the siege, Lin contacted the Apple Daily newspaper several times, claiming that he had been framed by a police officer in the robbery case for which he was wanted.
