Magnitude-5.3 earthquake rocks eastern Taiwan

Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) A magnitude-5.3 earthquake hit the eastern county of Hualien early Saturday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The tremor's epicenter was located at sea 71.2 kilometers south of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 22 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

Changbin Township in neighboring Taitung County recorded the strongest reading at an intensity of 5, the center said.
