Taipei, April 13 (CNA) A former bank employee who escaped to China in 2008 after allegedly embezzling nearly NT$62 million (US$2.1 million) was sent back to Taiwan Friday and handed over to Hsinchu prosecutors.
The suspect, surnamed Tsai, allegedly embezzled NT$61.8 million between October 1999 and October 2008 while working as an assistant manager at a Far Eastern International Bank branch in Hsinchu City, investigators said.
He escaped to China through Macau on Oct. 6, 2008, and the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office officially put him on the wanted list in September the following year, investigators said.
Taiwan's Investigation Bureau officials received a tip-off recently that Tsai was hiding in Dongguan in Guangdong Province and notified China's public security authorities.
At the request of the Taiwan side, Chinese police arrested Tsai and handed him over to Taiwanese agents based on a cross-Taiwan Strait judicial assistance pact, investigators added.
