Taipei, June 26 (CNA) Fan Hao-chun from Taiwan won the jury prize at the inaugural Soy Cibelino festival held in Spain over the weekend to recognize young designers with potential.
Fan won a cash prize of 12,000 euros (US$15,000) and the chance to work as an intern for Spain-based Cortefiel Group, one of the country's largest apparel retailers.
The 22-year-old, who graduated recently from Shih Chien University in Taipei, was the only participant from Asia in the June 21-24 competition, and he beat out rivals from prestigious design schools, such as Parsons of the United States, the Royal Danish Academy School of Arts and the Instituto Marangoni of Milan.
Fan drew inspiration for his winning "Endless Hope" series of designs from the Diana Ross song "If We Hold on Together," because he sees it as encouraging people to harbor hope and faith even in times of darkness and despair. His faith, he said, was in his passion for fashion design.
The young designer put together a collection in solid dark brown, beige and silver colors that he said created the illusion of people appearing to have hunched backs standing erect, and he was glad that the concept won the appreciation of the competition's jury.
