Taipei, May 19 (CNA) Unstable and rainy weather has been forecast across Taiwan for Sunday, with brief showers or thundershowers expected in most parts of the country, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

Due to the influence of southwesterly wind combined with thermal convection, chances of heavy or extremely heavy rain are high in the afternoon throughout the country, in particular in mountainous areas, the bureau said.

Daytime highs could surge to 30-32 degrees Celsius, while lows could drop to around 25 degrees late at night or early Monday morning, according to the CWB.

Foggy conditions are likely in outlying Kinmen and Matsu islands, and gusty winds are expected along the coastline in areas north of Taichung and southeastern and southern parts of the country, the bureau said.

Meanwhile, the air quality in almost all parts of Taiwan proper and on outlying islands was good, with a majority of the monitoring stations flashing a green flag indicating good air, and only five stations -- three in the north, one in the Hsinchu-Miaoli area and one on Matsu Island -- displaying a yellow flag that indicated moderate air quality.
