Taipei, June 25 (CNA) A five-year-old girl who gave away NT$200,000 (US$6,674) to sponsor nutritious meals for disadvantaged children during the summer vacation was one of several people recognized for their kindness at a news conference to encourage charitable work in northern Taiwan on Monday.
Sung Hsin-ni, a kindergarten student, donated the money from red envelopes that she received during the Chinese New Year holiday in the past.
"Off course I feel a pity to give up my savings but I don't want to see other children suffer from hunger," she said.
Over 25,000 underprivileged students received free school meals from the county government when school is in session, Taoyuan County Magistrate Wu Chih-yang said.
Last year, the county government also provided lunch to those who attended summer courses, he said.
However, Wu said he plans to raise NT$8.46 million to fund a new program this year to subsidize meals for around 3,000 disadvantaged students, regardless of whether they take part in extra lessons during the summer vacation.
At the event, Wu also expressed appreciation to county councilor Wan Mei-ling, who has helped raise NT$3.70 million for the vacation meals program.
He also praised other companies and organizations that have made donations.
