More local governments close schools, offices in typhoon fear

Taipei, June 20 (CNA) Counties and cities in northern and eastern Taiwan announced early Wednesday afternoon that offices and schools will be closed later that day in anticipation of heavy rain triggered by Tropical Storm Talim.

Miaoli County, Hsinchu County and City, as well as Hualien County, announced that from that afternoon, all schools and offices in the administrative regions will be closed.

Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung City also announced closures of schools and offices that evening.

Hualien Magistrate Fu Kun-chi said at 1 p.m. that considering the impact on office workers and students, the county government decided to close schools and offices before the rain became heavier.

The military also evacuated 43 people in Hualien's Chuohsi Township, bringing the total number of people evacuated around the country to in excess of 2,700.
