Kaohsiung, June 9 (CNA) A race of 19 sailing boats from Taiwan, Hong Kong and China got underway in Kaohsiung Harbor in southern Taiwan on Saturday.
At the launch of the Taiwan Strait Race 2012 at Glory Pier, Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Lee Yung-te expressed the hope that the regatta would help to attract more international exchanges.
The regatta, starting from the international harbor for the first time, will cross the Taiwan Strait and end in Xiamen on China’s east coast June 12.
"The Kaohsiung harbor view is amazing and that the weather and facilities are very suitable for water sports,” a contestant from China said.
A 24.89-meter sailing boat from Shenzhen in China was the largest vessel ever taking part in the race, which was organized by theKaohsiung City government's Marine Bureau, the Department of Sportsand the Chinese Taipei Sailing Association.
A camp for visitors to experience the fun of keelboat sailing is also being held as part of the sideline events.
