Taipei, May 14 (CNA) Taichung Vice Mayor Hsiao Chia-chi said Monday that the city government will assist a well-known local pastry store to continue operation in light of its long history in the city and its status as part of the city's culture.
The pastry store that makes suncakes, a famous Taichung delicacy, was shut down Sunday after its owner said he could not find apprentices to take over his business.
The store, with more than 60 years of history, is said to be the original bakery where the city's signature cake was invented. Taichung is home to some 800 suncake stores.
Hsiao said he will ask officials at the city's Economic Development of Bureau to look into the matter and discuss the possibilities of having enterprises invest in the business.
