Singapore, April 18 (CNA) Several Taiwanese participants at Asia's largest food and hospitality trade show in Singapore have won gold awards and other prizes at the biennial event Wednesday.
More than 200 Taiwanese are currently competing in the FHA (Food and Hotel Asia) 2012 Culinary Challenge being held April 17-20, and over 20 have won gold awards or other prizes in the first two days.
Gold winners from Taiwan include Rick Wang, a lecturer at National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, in the dessert category, and Chen Li-chen, an assistant professor at National Penghu University of Science and Technology, in the category of Asian meal display.
Chen impressed the judges and beat over 30 competitors in her category by using Taiwan ingredients like sergestid shrimps and dried salted mullet roe.
A four-member team from Wang's school also won gold in the Dream Team Challenge, which requires contestants to prepare an "all-day dining, trendy food and beverage experience for three diners in a cafe setting."
Besides individuals and teams organized by culinary schools, Taiwan was also represented by two teams of hotel chefs, who will compete against rivals from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia in the Imperial Challenge.
The three finalist teams in the Imperial Challenge, in which chefs have to prepare Chinese banquet dishes, will be announced Thursday, ahead of the challenge's final stage on the following day.
