Taipei, Jan. 9 (CNA) Taipei Mass Rapid Transit's (MRT's) Nangangeastern extension passed the preliminary inspection Sunday, bringingit one step closer to commercial operation that will offer bettertransfer service between the Nangang Line and the Wenhu Line via theTaipei Nangang Exhibition Center Station.
The transfer service at the station has been highly anticipated,as it will connect downtown Taipei and suburban Nangang. At present,passengers traveling between the two areas have to use a combinationof MRT and shuttle bus to make the journey.
After the inspection, the committee said five items must beimproved before the final inspection, while 13 items were categorizedas generally to-be improved and 11 items as follow-up suggestions.
As Nangang Exhibition Center Station and a giant indoormotorcycle parking lot are part of the construction project, publicsafety issues such as fire breakouts have become the focus in theinspection, said the committee chairman Chiou Yu-chiun.
The parking lot, which will offer 760 parking spaces formotorcycles, is the biggest of its kind among all MRT terminals, manyof which have parking lots for commuters.
Chiou said the overall performance of the supervising Departmentof Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) and Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation(TRTC) has been satisfactory.
"Once the line is in function, around 200,000 passengers permonth could benefit from the convenient transfer service that takesonly one minute," Chiou said.
DORTS officials said they are hopeful that the Nangang easternextension will start operation before Lunar New Year, should thefinal inspection go smoothly as well.
