New reclaimed greenspace to open in northern Taiwan

Taipei, Nov. 12 (CNA) A new 17-hectare riverside park in thenorthern Taiwan county of Taipei will be inaugurated Saturday, thecounty government announced Friday.

Chen Yiao-tung, acting director of the county's Urban and RuralDevelopment Bureau, said the park, named SanYing Waterfront, is partof a land reclamation project for the banks of the Tahan River inYingge Township.

The site is a former dump for waste from the ceramic industry,the local specialty, and the county government started in 2006 totransform the riverside reclaimed land into a green area as part ofefforts to develop the southwestern area of the county coveringYingge and neighboring Sansia Township into an "internationalwaterfront city with culture and history," Chen said.

In addition to open grassland, the site -- described as being thesize of 20 football pitches -- also houses the largest outdoor stageover a river in northern Taiwan and a riverside track, according tothe county government.

On inauguration day, Taipei Magistrate Chou Hsi-wei and hisadministration will host an opening ceremony, while an all-dayconcert will take place on the stage.

Taipei County is to become a special municipality named XinbeiCity on Dec. 25 when it will become the country's most populous city.
