Taipei, May 15 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and former Premier Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will hold a series of televised debates ahead of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) primary for next year's presidential election, the party said Wednesday.

At a meeting of proxies of Tsai and Lai, the two sides reached several conclusions, one of which was to hold the televised presentations, although they did not agree on the number of debates, according to DPP Secretary-General Lo Wen-jia (羅文嘉), who chaired the meeting.

During the televised presentations, each candidate will make an opening statement, answer questions and give a conclusion regarding their platforms, Lo said at a press conference.

He said no decision was reached on whether the primary should include an opinion poll, but that issue will be discussed at a follow-up meeting on May 17.

Tsai's campaign manager Ruan Jhao-syong (阮昭雄) said the president needs to consider how many debates she can participate in, given her busy schedule.

Lai's campaign manager Lin Chun-hsien (林俊憲), meanwhile, urged the DPP to set a definite date for its primary.

Until then, all other issues are moot, Lin said, adding that he hoped the arrangements for the primary could be completed before the end of May.
