Taipei, Jan. 25 (CNA) The Marshall Islands' new Ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan) Neijon Rema Edwards has arrived in Taipei to assume her post and has pledged to further promote bilateral ties based on the existing foundation, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Friday.

MOFA said Edwards arrived in Taipei Jan. 21 and presented her credentials to Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) Friday.

Wu extended a warm welcome to Edwards and expressed confidence that the new ambassador will help strengthen bilateral relations, the ministry said.

The foreign minister, meanwhile, said he hopes the Pacific island nation will continue to support Taiwan's bids for meaningful participation in international organizations.

In response, Edwards said she looks forward to helping consolidate bilateral ties and promoting cooperation and exchanges between the two countries, the ministry said.

Edwards succeeds Frederick H. Muller, who served as Marshall Islands' ambassador to Taiwan from 2015-2018.

Taiwan and the Marshall Islands established diplomatic relations in 1998.
