Taipei, Dec. 18 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) promised Tuesday that the central government will provide assistance to Taoyuan City to expedite its infrastructure and public projects.

In a meeting in Taoyuan with Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦), the president was briefed about a proposal for five major development projects, including an infrastructure upgrade to boost tourism, additional public housing units, and a museum and concert hall complex.

When the central government gives the green light for local governments to embark on a development project, construction has to move "at a quick pace," Cheng said. "I hope that the president would oversee the progress of these projects."

In response, Tsai said she has scheduled meetings with six city mayors to establish a better communication channel between the central and local governments.

With such a communication channel in place, the central and local governments will be able to work together to expedite the construction of public development projects, she said, adding that the first meeting was held Dec. 13 with Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲).

Tsai scheduled the meetings with mayors of Taiwan's six special municipalities in the wake of the Nov. 24 local government elections in which her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) suffered heavy losses.

Cheng retained the Taoyuan seat for the DPP, securing a second term, after defeating Chen Shei-saint (陳學聖) of the Kuomintang by a wide margin of 14.1 percent.
