Policy on Taiwan unchanged despite map color scheme: U.S. official

Washington, Aug. 10 (CNA) The U.S. State Department said Friday Washington's policy towards Taiwan has not changed, in response to Taipei's concerns over a map on its website in which Taiwan and China have been grouped under the same color scheme.

"The United States remains committed to our one-China policy based on the three joint communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act," a spokesperson for the State Department said in an email to CNA.

"We consider Taiwan to be a vital partner, a democratic success story, and a force for good in the world. Taiwan shares our values, has earned our respect, and continues to merit our strong support," the spokesperson added.

Asked about the matter earlier that day, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Andrew Lee (李憲章) said the ministry had asked its representative office in the U.S. to reach out to the State Department for clarification and had received an explanation from the U.S. State Department, in which it assured that the U.S. stance on Taiwan remained unchanged.

Lee said the ministry had reminded the U.S. State Department that the same color scheme for the map of Taiwan and China on its website may lead to confusion and suggested the State Department make modifications.
