Taipei, May 26 (CNA) United States Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) told reporters on arrival on Saturday that he was happy to be visiting to express his country's firm support for Taiwan.

Amid Beijing's increased suppression of Taiwan on multiple fronts, Gardner included Taiwan at the last minute in his official tour of Asia. Gardner said he is visiting to meet with officials to discuss how Taiwan, with the help of the U.S., can navigate its current situation.

His two-day visit will include meetings with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), a dinner hosted by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), and talks with other high-ranking officials on how to strengthen U.S.-Taiwan relations and deal with Taiwan's other pressing international issues.

A longtime advocate for Taiwan, Gardner said he was happy to have the opportunity to visit.

Gardner is chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy.
