Taipei, March 8 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) made her first public appearance since the passing of her mother when she visited the Military Intelligence Bureau (MIB) Thursday to offer encouragement to its personnel.

Tsai wrote in a Facebook post, "We are the white sheet of paper that carries history."

The quote "We are the white sheet of paper that carries history," is being displayed on a wall at the Military Intelligence Bureau Thursday (image taken from President Tsai Ing-wen 蔡英文 Facebook page).

The phrase, which is displayed on a wall inside the MIB, means that regardless of the twists and turns of history, the contributions and sacrifice made by intelligence personnel are often unknown to the public and can be only left blank, according to Tsai's Facebook post.

The MIB has an unknown heroes monument to commemorate the sacrifices of its personnel, according to Tsai's post.

She visited the bureau to offer encouragement and paid tribute at the monument, offering thanks to all those unheralded heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice to uphold Taiwan's freedom and democracy.

President Tsai's mother, Chang Chin-feng (張金鳳), passed away on March 3 at the age of 93.
