Taipei, April 19 (CNA) Taiwan's representative-designate to Thailand Yang Kuo-chiang (楊國強) has resigned, citing family reasons, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Yang, a former director general of the National Security Bureau, was appointed by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) as Taiwan's envoy to Thailand on March 24.

However, Foreign Minister David Lee (李大維) said during a legislative committee hearing Wednesday that Yang had tendered his resignation due to illness in his family.

Lee declined to give any further details when pressed by a Kuomintang legislator in the Foreign and National Defense Committee.

Prior to Yang's appointment as Taiwan's representative-designate to Thailand, his most recent service was as director general of the National Security Bureau, a position that he resigned last October.
