Taiwan closely monitoring Chinese naval vessels

2012/05/08 22:24:53

Taipei, May 8 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense is closely monitoring a fleet of Chinese naval vessels currently in international waters southeast of Taiwan proper, said the ministry's spokesman Luo Shou-he Tuesday.

Luo was responding to a report by Sankei Shimbun, a Japanese daily, stating Japan's maritime self-defense force discovered a fleet of Chinese destroyers 650 kilometers southwest of Japan's Okinawa Prefecture Sunday.

According to the report, the Chinese naval vessels were conducting tactical formations and helicopter training missions in international waters, so were not violating maritime laws.

Taiwan's Navy and coastal radar stations will work together to monitor the movements of the Chinese vessels, Luo said.

The Chinese navy, which has been expanding rapidly in recent years, will avoid confrontations and conflicts with neighboring countries while carrying out missions, stated Ding Shu-fan, a researcher and director of the Institute of International Relations of National Chengchi University.
