Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu wins primary to represent KMT in 2020 race

Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) will represent the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) in the 2020 presidential election after beating his closest challenger, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. former chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘) by nearly 20 percent in the party's primary.

Announcing the results at a press conference in Taipei Monday, KMT Vice Chairman Tseng Yung-chuan (曾永權) said Han received an average support rate of 44.805 percent in five different polls, conducted nationwide from July 8 to 14, which collected 15,185 valid samples through landline-based interviews.

Gou, the runner-up in the poll, received an average 27.73 percent of support.

The opposition party conducted its primary using opinion polls, with the five participating candidates measured against each other and against potential candidates in the January 2020 election.
