Taipei, May 13 (CNA) The Maokong Gondola service will be suspended for 16 days beginning next week for annual maintenance, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) said Monday.

The system will be shut down from May 20 to June 4, according to TRTC's announcement.

Maintenance will be carried out on the cable car's wheel bearings, hydraulic cylinders, and cable wheels, and work will also be done to upgrade the system's control software.

The annual maintenance program is usually carried out in May to stay away from thunderstorms that usually occur in Taiwan from June through August, the company said.

According to TRTC statistics, ridership on the Maokong Gondola totaled 2.11 million passengers last year, a 1.1 percent rise from the previous year.

The cable car service takes riders on a 4.03-kilometer ride up a mountain in Muzha to the famous tea-growing Maokong area in southern Taipei. It has been a popular attraction with tourists and local residents since it opened in July 2007.
