Taipei, May 12 (CNA) Two people were killed and four others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on National Freeway No. 3 near Zhunan, Hsinchu City late night Saturday, the city's fire department said on Sunday.

The multiple-vehicle pileup involving two cars, one truck and one van occurred on the 117.9 km marker of the southbound lanes on the Zhunan section of National Freeway No. 3, according to the department.

One car was involved in a side-impact collision and then a rear-end crash and was seriously damaged, the police said.

Firefighters and police were immediately sent to the scene to assist people affected by the accident, particularly the two people trapped in the nearly destroyed car -- a 46-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman.

However, they found the two had suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). They were then transported to a hospital in Miaoli where they were pronounced dead.

The four other injured in the traffic accident were also rushed to the same hospital. They suffered moderate or light injuries.

Police are still investigating the accident to find out the cause.
