Magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocks eastern Taiwan

Taipei, April 18 (CNA) A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit eastern Taiwan at 1:01 p.m. Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The epicenter of the temblor was about 10.6 kilometers northwest of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 18.8 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Hualien County, where it measured 7 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 5 in Hualien City, Yilan, Nantou, Taichung and New Taipei, and 4 in Taipei among others, the bureau said.
