Taipei, March 14 (CNA) Life sentences were being sought for three residents of Tainan in southern Taiwan Thursday for allegedly abusing a baby girl and causing her death in January, according to the Tainan District Prosecutors Office.

In addition to the three suspects who are being detained by the Tainan District Court, the girl's mother, a 17-year-old minor surnamed Hsueh (薛), has been taken into custody by the juvenile court.

All four -- Hsueh, her partner surnamed Li (李), her cousin and her cousin's husband identified as Ho (何) -- admitted to having beaten the 1-year-old baby, but denied charges that they intended to kill her.

With the girl sustaining a head injury and serious bruising over a large part of her body, the three were indicted on charges of intentionally harming and abusing a child as well as homicide, according to the indictment.

A police investigation found that the four frequently beat the girl with a variety of objects when she cried, denied her food and deprived her of sleep.

The girl was pronounced dead in the evening of Jan. 15, shortly after being taken to hospital, according to the police.

The police said they found that the four had beaten the girl and hit her head against a wall after she cried and spilled a bottle of milk in the early hours that day.

Despite the fact that the girl's temperature had dropped and her eyes had rolled up in her head, they did not take her to hospital immediately, but instead went to a KTV parlor with the child's "frozen body," according to the police investigation.
