Magnitude 5.1 earthquake rocks New Taipei

Taipei, March 13 (CNA) An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale hit New Taipei in northern Taiwan at 4:19 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 40.9 kilometers east of New Taipei City Hall at a depth of 132.5 km, the CWB said.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in parts of New Taipei, Yilan County, Hualien County and Taichung, where it measured 2 on Taiwan's 7-tiered intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 1 in Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City, according to the bureau.
