Taipei, Oct. 4 (CNA) Typhoon Kong-Rey's periphery will bring rain to Taiwan and gusting wind to coastal areas Thursday and Friday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

Northern and northeastern parts of Taiwan can expect heavy rain or extremely heavy rain Thursday and early Friday, while other parts of the country can expect cloudy skies, with isolated intermittent showers forecast in mountainous areas, CWB forecaster Lee Meng-hsuan (李孟軒) said.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, Kong-Rey was located about 650 kilometers east-southeast of Taipei and was traveling in a north-northwesterly direction at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour, according to the CWB.

Kong-Rey was packing maximum sustained winds of 155 kph, with gusts of up to 191 kph, the CWB said.

On Thursday, daytime temperatures are expected to hit over 30 degrees Celsius in central and southern Taiwan, as well as Hualien and Taitung in the east, while ranging between 24-27 degrees in northern and northeastern parts of the country, Lee said.

Kong-Rey's radius will be closest to northeastern Taiwan Thursday night and early Friday morning and the storm will move toward Japan and South Korea, Lee said.
