Taipei, June 15 (CNA) A passing tropical depression will increase the probability of rain across Taiwan on Friday, with downpours expected in southern regions, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

The low-pressure system, which weakened after making landfall in southwestern Taiwan Friday morning, is currently moving in an east-northeast direction at 15 kilometers per hour, CWB data showed.

The system is expected to leave Taiwan from the east coast in the afternoon, at which point it is likely to be upgraded to a tropical storm, forecaster Liu Pei-teng (劉沛騰) said.

Strong winds reaching 9-10 on the Beaufort scale have been recorded in Kaohsiung and Pingtung as well as coastal areas on the Hengchun Peninsula, he said.

Due to the tropical depression, extremely heavy rain (precipitation reaching 200mm in 24 hours) or torrential rain (350mm in 24 hours) is expected Friday in parts of Pingtung and the Hengchun Peninsula, the bureau said.

Meanwhile, heavy rain (80mm in 24 hours) or extremely heavy rain, is forecast in parts of Tainan, Kaohsiung and Taitung as well as mountainous areas of Yilan, it said.

Heavy rain can be expected in parts of Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Yilan, Hualien, Taichung and Penghu, the CWB added.
