Taipei, April 21 (CNA) The 2018 Fulong International Sand Sculpture Arts Festival kicked off in New Taipei Saturday, with the announcement of the winners of the international sand sculpting competition that featured artists from 13 countries.

Titled "A Remarkable Journey into Golden Sands -- Let's Find Love and Courage Together," the annual festival showcases sand sculptures created by both domestic and foreign artists, including for the first time sculptures that are upside down and ones that are underground.

Visitors to the festival will be able to feast their eyes on Belgian Irina Sokolova's sculpture "Inspiration," which won first prize in the international competition, as well as Japan's Toshihiko Hosaka's creation, which won second prize and China's Wang Jie's (王杰) work, which won third.

All the sculptures depict the artists' imagining of a world of flowers.

The festival will run until July 15 and will feature a local sculpting competition on May 26, with 20 participating teams.

As organizers have strived to make the annual festival more interactive and accessible, they have created audio guides in English, Japanese and Korean that can be used by scanning a QR-code on site.
