Taipei, March 8 (CNA) A strong continental cold air mass and moist front arrived in Taiwan Thursday, sending the mercury plunging to around 10 degrees Celsius in parts of the country and bringing snow to its highest peak, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Lows of 9-11 degrees can be expected in regions from Taichung northward Thursday, with a chance of sporadic showers, CWB forecaster Chen Yi-hsiu (陳伊秀) said.

Snow fell on 3,952-meter Yushan at around 7 a.m., with an accumulation of 2 centimeters recorded, Chen said.

The cold spell is forecast to last until Saturday, during which time coastal and open areas in northern, northeastern and central Taiwan, as well as the outlying island of Matsu, could see lows of around 10 degrees at night and during the early morning hours, she said.

The weather, however, will become drier from Friday as moisture decreases, she added.
