Taipei, March 7 (CNA) A strong cold air mass is expected to arrive in Taiwan on Thursday, sending temperatures plunging to around 10 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Wednesday, issuing a cold weather warning for 15 cities and counties.

From Thursday to Saturday, lows of about 10 degrees can be expected in coastal areas of northern and northeastern Taiwan and the outlying Matsu Islands, the CWB said.

In the greater Taipei area, temperatures are likely to fall to 11-12 degrees late at night and early in the morning over the next three days, according to the CWB.

As a result the bureau said, it was issuing a low temperature warning for cities of Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung and Chiayi; counties of Hsinchu, Miaoli, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi and Yilan; and the islands of Matsu.

It cautioned farmers to take measures to protect their crops, fish and animals against the weather and warned that people should ensure proper ventilation when using gas appliances and water heaters.

The CWB also warned of strong winds in 19 cities and counties on Thursday, including open coastal areas and the islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu.

As the cold front approached Wednesday evening, windward areas of northern and eastern Taiwan were experiencing rain, which was expected to continue until Saturday morning, according to CWB forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan (張承傳).

Although the rain is likely to ease from Saturday afternoon, temperatures will remain low due to the effects of radiative cooling, with the mercury in coastal areas of western Taiwan dipping to below 10 degrees, Chang said.
