Magnitude 4.8 quake rocks northeastern Taiwan

Taipei, March 6 (CNA) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted eastern Taiwan at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at sea, about 9.1 kilometers east of Yilan County Hall at a depth of 87.2 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Yilan County's Nan'ao Township, where it measured 3 on Taiwan's 7-tiered intensity scale.

The earthquake could be felt in northern Taiwan, with an intensity of 2 measured in parts of Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli.
