Taipei, Feb. 10 (CNA) Temperatures around Taiwan are expected to take a plunge beginning late Saturday as a cold surge arrives, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

Daytime temperatures on Saturday were expected to reach 18-22 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan and 24-28 degrees in the rest of the country, with a chance of rain in some areas, the bureau said.

The arrival of the cold surge, however, will send temperatures as low as 7-9 degrees Celsius in northern, northeastern and central Taiwan and 10-13 degrees in southern Taiwan and in Hualien and Taitung in the east from Sunday to early Tuesday, according to the CWB.

The weather will also turn drier from Sunday as the rain gradually eases, according to the CWB.

The cold surge will begin to weaken during the day on Feb. 13, giving way to several days of warmer weather until Lunar New Year's Eve on Feb. 15, the bureau forecast.

It warned, however, that daytime and nighttime temperatures could vary by more than 10 degrees from Feb. 13 to 15 in parts of Taiwan.
