Magnitude 5.7 earthquake rocks Taipei

Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) A magnitude 5.7 earthquake jolted Taipei at 1:59 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The earthquake's epicenter was located in Taipei's Beitou District, about 12.3 kilometers northwest of Taipei City Hall, at a depth of 140 km, according to the CWB's website.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Xinyi District in Taipei City, New Taipei City and downtown Yilan, where it measured 3 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.
