Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Nine people were injured and rushed to hospitals after a silver Mercedes-Benz rammed into shoppers waiting on line on a covered sidewalk in Taipei on Sunday.

The injured, including one person who was in a coma but still showing vital signs, were sent to four different Taipei hospitals -- Tri-service General Hospital, Tri-service General Hospital Songshan Branch, Taipei Medical University Hospital and Cathay General Hospital.

Taipei's Fire Department dispatched personnel and ambulances to the scene after it received a report at 2:55 p.m. notifying it of the accident that occurred outside Chia Te Bakery on Section 5 of Nanjing East Road.

The five women and four men who were injured included shoppers who were lined up outside the store. The bakery is known for its long lines because of the popularity of its renowned pineapple cakes among local shoppers and tourists.

The driver of the silver Mercedes-Benz -- a 77-year-old man surnamed Li (李) -- told police he had backed up his car and was starting to turn it forward when it suddenly accelerated, but police said they are still investigating the actual cause of the accident.
