Costco Taiwan offering 'buy one get one free' TV sale on Black Friday

Taipei, Nov. 24 (CNA) A Black Friday sale by Costco Wholesale Corp. in Taiwan includes a "buy one get one free" offer on a certain TV model, the American warehouse club said on the first day of its Nov. 24-26 deep discount period.

Many Costco members braved chilly temperatures around the island, queuing up for hours Friday to enter the stores as soon as they opened at 9 a.m., an hour earlier than usual.

At one Costco outlet in Taipei's Neihu District, customers started lining up at 3 a.m. to take advantage of the in-store-only deals that the company had kept secret until Friday.

One of the deals was a 60-inch Sharp TV, which was being sold at a price of around NT$30,000 (US$1,000) with the offer of a free 45-inch InFocus TV that usually costs about NT$12,500 in Taiwan.

Costco had deliberately been close-lipped about its discounts in a bid to lure as many customers as possible to its physical stores to join the shopping frenzy that characterizes Black Friday in the U.S., Vice President Wang Yu-mei (王友玫) told the press.

During Costco Taiwan's three-day Black Friday sales, it is offering discounts on a wide range of items but some of them are limited to one per person so that as many consumers as possible can benefit, Wang said.

It is the first time that Costco's 13 stores around Taiwan are offering Black Friday sales, in the tradition of U.S. retailers' deep discounts right after the Thanksgiving holiday.
