5 of 11 suspects in jewelry theft have fled Taiwan: police

Taipei, Nov. 8 (CNA) Five of 11 individuals police have identified as suspects in a NT$200 million jewelry heist from the 2017 Taiwan Jewellery & Gem Fair have already left the country following the robbery on Monday night, Taipei police said Wednesday.

Four men and one woman, who are now known to be of Mexican and Colombian nationality, departed from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport immediately after stealing the bag of jewels on Monday night, according to the Taipei City Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.

The bag contained three loose diamonds, a sapphire broach and three jade rings, worth NT$200 million in total.

The division has contacted the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to help track down the five individuals whose identities are now known to local police.

As for the remaining six suspects, the police have yet to confirm their identities and are continuing their search in the hope of retrieving the stolen jewels.

There are currently 200 police officers assigned to the case, monitoring surveillance footage and local hotels in an effort to locate and question the six suspects.
