Taipei, Sept. 25 (CNA) The sky lantern festival in Pingxi District in New Taipei, traditionally held during the Lantern Festival at the start of the Lunar year, will be held for the first time during the Mid-Autumn Festival the city's Tourism and Travel Department said Monday.

The original event, which is held annually around the Lantern Festival around the Lunar New Year holiday, will take place at 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the Pingxi Junior High School, the department said.

"Both the Lantern Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival are important traditional holidays in Taiwan." said Chen Kuo-chun (陳國君).

It is hoped that the "new version" of the sky lantern festival will attract more foreign tourists to New Taipei, the department said, adding that event has been well-received among tourists from South Korea, Japan, Thailand and the United States.

There will be eight rounds of releases of the lanterns that evening, some of which will be designed in the shape of the moon to celebrate the festival, it said.

Each year, the sky lantern festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Pingxi.

The northern Taiwan city of New Taipei was included on the list of the 10 best winter destinations in the world by National Geographic magazine last year, based on the city's Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival.

In 2013, the festival was named by Fodor's Travel -- the world's largest publisher of travel guides -- as one of the world's 14 festivals a person must attend in their lifetime.

The festival was also named one of the "52 things to do in 2013" by CNN Travel.
