Taiwanese cabin crew surprised by Garuda Indonesia suspension

2014/06/18 17:05:36

Jakarta, June 18 (CNA) Taiwanese cabin crew working on the Jakarta-Taipei route of Garuda Indonesia were apparently taken aback when the Indonesian flag carrier announced that it was suspending services on the route.

Saphina Wu, a member of the Garuda cabin crew, said that "we were taken by surprise" by the announcement.

Garuda Indonesia announced recently that the Jakarta-Taipei route would be suspended Aug. 11, with the return Taipei-Jakarta route suspended the following day. All those with pre-booked tickets are eligible for refunds.

Garuda's marketing manager told CNA that the decision to suspend the route was because growth has been slow over the past two years and the company has been losing money on the route every month.

But he also said that although the company is canceling the Jakarta-Taipei route, it might add a Bali-Taipei route, upon which the Taiwanese cabin crew employed by the company can serve.

Garuda Indonesia resumed flights to Taiwan in May 2012 after a hiatus of almost eight years. It employs 14 Taiwanese as cabin crew staff.
