Taipei, March 12 (CNA) A plum tree-planting ceremony in remembrance of the 93rd anniversary of the passing of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China (ROC), was held in the grounds of Chung Shan Park at the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall complex in Taipei Monday.

Staff of the memorial hall led the public in singing the The Plum Blossom, a patriotic song of the ROC.

Performances then followed by Taipei Municipal Guang Fu Elementary School children's Chinese orchestra, which delivered many Taiwanese classics, including Torment of a Flower, Bang Chun-hong and One Plum Blossom.

Lin Kuo-chang (林國章), National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall director-general, said he hoped to use the opportunity to spread the importance of the plum blossom.

"The plum blossom is our national flower, even though society nowadays does not stress its importance that much," said Lin, adding that "however we must be courageous and say that the plum blossom in the ROC is very important."

After the performances, Lin then led the ceremony to an area in Chung Shan Park -- the garden that surrounds the memorial hall -- to witness the planting of three plum trees to commemorate Sun.

"Through this event, we hope to connect with culture and students to allow people to be more familiar with the environment and history," said Lin, who added that it carries the ideology of "universal fraternity" and the "world community shared by all."

"Universal fraternity" and "the world community shared by all" appear in Sun's writings and ideology.

"This year we have planted 20 plum trees and have now added three more," said Lin, explaining that as the trees mature, this area of the park will become a distinct feature.

The memorial hall opened in 1972, Lin noted, adding that its aim is to pass on culture and remember the history of the nation's founder.
