Taipei, Nov. 19 (CNA) The first bird race in the eastern county of Hualien ended with participants recording 41 species of birds in three forests within the three-hour duration of the event on Sunday.

A total of 66 birdwatchers took part in the contest organized by Hualien Forest District Office under the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture together with three civic groups devoted to environmental protection -- Kuroshio Ocean Educational Foundation, Citizen of the Earth and Happiness 193 Union.

Divided into three teams, participants recorded 41 different bird species in the forests along the coast of Xincheng Township, near the scenic Chishingtan Beach and on Meilun Mountain in three hours, said Hualien Forest District Office Director Yang Jui-fen (楊瑞芬).

Twenty-seven of the observed bird species were spotted in Xincheng forest, 23 in Chishingtan forest and eight on Meilun Mountain, which is close to the urban area of Hualien City, Yang said.

Compared with more than 70 species of birds observed annually in the Fraser's Hill International Bird Race in Malaysia, which runs for a whole day, the variety of birds recorded in Hualien was relatively high, she said.

The result indicates that ornithological preservation work in the forests of Hualien has been successful, the official added.
