Taiwanese students promote cultural exchanges in El Salvador

Taipei, July 8 (CNA) A Taiwanese youth delegation is currently ona two-week visit to El Salvador to promote academic and culturalexchanges with students at the University of El Salvador, theMinistry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Thursday.

The delegation, headed by Chang Shu-ying, a National TaiwanUniversity professor, will hold seminars with El Salvador universitystudents on a range of topics, including a comparison of thepolitical and education systems in the two countries, as well asenvironmental issues, the ministry said.

The delegation, composed of six students from NTU's politicalscience, foreign literature and physics departments, will also visitthe Salvadoran parliament and the Central American Integration Systemto get first-hand information of the country's parliamentaryoperations and developments in regional integration, the ministrysaid.

At an opening ceremony for the program three days earlierpresided over by Republic of China Ambassador to El Salvador CarlosLiao and University of El Salvador President Rufino Quezada, Liaosaid that the program was designed to allow Taiwanese students toexperience grassroots diplomacy by means of direct contact with theirpeers in the country's diplomatic allies.

During the ceremony, Liao also signed a memorandum ofunderstanding on a scholarship program under which Taiwan will offera total of US$50,000 in scholarships to outstanding students frompoor families attending the Salvadoran university. The scholarshipswill be offered to 50 qualified students at the end of this year.

The NTU delegation is scheduled to return to Taiwan July 14.
