Taipei, Jan. 14 (CNA) EVA Air, one of Taiwan's leading airlines, said Monday it will launch direct flights between Taoyuan and Aomori in northeastern Japan on July 17 as it continues to expand capacity to the country.

The route will be operated every Wednesday and Saturday using an Airbus A321-200, the carrier said.

The outbound flights will depart from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 11:30 a.m. and arrive at 4:05 p.m. at Aomori Airport, while the inbound flight will take off at 5:15 p.m. and arrive in Taiwan at 8:20 p.m., the carrier said.

Japan will be EVA's target market in 2019, said EVA President Clay Sun (孫嘉明), adding that the airline's capacity to Japan "could increase by 10 percent" this year with new destinations added to the flight network and the use of bigger aircraft.

EVA also announced recently that it would begin providing daily round-trip flights between Taoyuan and Nagoya in central Japan starting on June 6 using its newly acquired Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

With the addition of the new service to Aomori, EVA Air will fly 144 flights per week to 12 Japanese destinations, the carrier said.

EVA Air also said it will continue to provide charter flights to destinations such as Akita, Fukushima, Kumamoto and Nagasaki.
