Taipei, Oct. 21 (CNA) Taiwan-based Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩) was the fourth largest PC vendor in the world for the third quarter of this year, while Acer Inc. (宏碁) was the sixth largest, according to U.S. market information advisory firm Gartner Inc.

In a research report, Gartner said sales from Asustek and Acer fell in line with the global total amid weak demand, most notably in particular in the U.S. market, during the July-September period.

Asustek shipped 4.89 million PCs in the third quarter, down 9.0 percent from a year earlier, for a 7.3 percent share of the global market and a fall from 7.7 percent over the same period last year, the report said.

For its part, Acer accounted for a 6.5 percent share of the world market after shipping 4.32 million units, down 6.2 percent from a year earlier. The company's market share also fell from 6.6 percent in the same period of last year, the report added.

In the third quarter, global PC shipments totaled about 67 million units, down 3.6 percent from a year earlier, marking the 12th consecutive quarter PC shipments have moved lower, with vendors' promotional campaigns failing to encourage consumers to jump into the market and buy.

"While there were signs of stabilization in the PC industry in key regions, including EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), Japan and Latin America, the relatively stable results were offset by the U.S. market, which saw a 10 percent year-over-year decline in part because of a very weak back-to-school sales season," Mika Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said in a statement.

Kitagawa said the weak back-to-school sales showed consumer PC demand was too weak to boost overall PC shipments, despite brands stepping up their sales promotion efforts.

HP Inc. of the United States was the largest global PC vendor in the third quarter with a 21.8 percent market share after the firm shipped 14.59 million PCs, up 4.4 percent from a year earlier, Gartner said. HP's market share was also up from 20.1 percent seen in the same period of last year, Gartner added.

China's Lenovo Group Ltd. (聯想) came second, with a 21.4 percent market share after shipping 14.36 million units in the third quarter, down 1.5 percent from a year earlier, Gartner said.

U.S-based Dell Inc. was the third largest PC vendor, with a 15.2 percent market share on shipments of 10.15 million units, while Apple Inc., another U.S. consumer electronics giant, shipped 4.61 million units to take a 6.9 percent share as the fifth largest PC vendor, Gartner added.

The advisory firm said while the U.S. business PC market appears stable, a shortage in components have boosted product prices, which could cap demand from small and medium sized enterprises.
