Taipei, Sept. 26 (CNA) The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) will hold an investment conference on Oct. 17 to solicit more than NT$100 billion (US$3.3 billion), mainly to support the government's Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program.

The focus of the conference will be railway development, one of eight categories under the four-year, NT$420 billion infrastructure program, the ministry said.

Taiwan High Speed Rail Co. is looking to solicit investment of NT$17 billion to maintain facilities, upgrade systems and improve services, and the Taiwan Railways Administration is looking for NT$28 billion to procure cars and power and track facilities, the ministry said.

One of the goals of the railway development project is to merge the high speed and traditional rail systems into "a core transport service that is seamless, safe and reliable, convenient and easy to use, and sustainable," according to the Executive Yuan.

Aside from the infrastructure project, another NT$28 billion in investment will be solicited for land development around the Taoyuan and Tainan high speed rail stations, and tens of billions of Taiwan dollars will be sought for harbor expansion across the island, the MOTC said.
