Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) Local smartphone vendor HTC Corp. will launch its new high-end model -- the HTC J Butterfly -- in Taiwan next week, a few days ahead of the arrival of Apple's iPhone 5, HTC said Saturday.
The new 5-inch flagship models will be launched Dec. 11 in partnership with Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest telecom operator.
The HTC J Butterfly, which is expected to hit Japan in the middle of this month, is the twin of the Droid DNA handset launched in the United States Nov. 14.
The new phones feature an ultra-sharp display, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and the option of high-speed 4G LTE Internet access.
Running on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, the phones are waterproof and equipped with an electronic wallet.
Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone 5 will hit local stores Dec. 14. Pre-orders for the devices, which started early this month, have reached 300,000.
The first batch by the end of this month will total 100,000, according to estimates by local telecom operators.
Analysts said the timing of HTC's launch of the HTC J Butterfly took into consideration Chirstmas shoppers and users who want to change to newer models.
