Taipei, July 21 (CNA) Taiwanese students won three gold medals and one silver at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2019 in Hungary, finishing fourth overall on Sunday, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said.

At the science Olympiad for high school students under the age of 20, Taiwan was represented by four students who had been selected and trained by Professor Cheng Jiin-tsuey (陳錦翠) of National Sun Yat-sen University's Department of Biological Sciences and 19 other Taiwan professors.

The Taiwan team finished fourth behind China, South Korea and Hungary at the IBO, which was held July 14-21 in Szeged, Hungary, the education ministry said in statement.

In the individual category, Tseng Chih-chen (曾治蓁) of National Taichung First Senior High School finished in 12th place globally, which was the best performance by a Taiwanese student, the ministry said.

The MOE said it will grant each of the gold medal winners NT$200,000 (US$6,434), while each of the silver medal winners will receive NT$100,000.

Since Taiwan began participating in the IBO in 1999, it has taken 61 gold, 20 silver and three bronze medals, gaining a fifth place standing globally.
