Taipei, Feb. 21 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis veteran Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) advanced to the semi-finals of the women's singles at the 2019 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, rallying in the third set to defeat Czech Karolína Plíšková in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

The 33-year-old Hsieh ended the run of the No. 4 seed Plíšková after she bounced back from 1-5 down in the third set to win the match 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, in just under two hours.

Reflecting on the match, Hsieh said in English it is never easy to turn things around and she just tried to encourage herself by saying: "Okay, if she doesn't ace me, I hit (the) ball, hit so much harder than before, then she (Plíšková) cannot hit a winner, I have a chance to win (a) little bit more games, then the score doesn't look too bad."

Hsieh's clinical display was also shown a day earlier when she defeated former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber of Germany for the first time in her career in the last 16.

The win marked Hsieh's first victory against the former world No. 1 in three encounters and her first victory over a top-10 player since stunning then-world No. 1 Simona Halep at Wimbledon last summer.

The Taiwanese veteran faces 2013 Dubai champion Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals Thursday.

The 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships is an ATP 500 event on the 2019 ATP Tour and a WTA Premier 5 event on the 2019 WTA Tour. The women's tournament, which carries a total purse of US$2.828 million, concludes on Feb. 23.
