Taipei, Aug. 5 (CNA) China has assumed an even more overbearing manner toward Taiwan aimed at undermining the morale of the Taiwanese people and causing disruption to society, but Taiwan will not yield an inch, no matter how great the pressure, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said Sunday.

Tsai, who is also chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), made the remarks on the campaign trail in Tainan for the party's nominee for city mayor, Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲), and its city councilor candidates.

Speaking to about 1,000 DPP supporters, Tsai enumerated her administration's achievements in domestic affairs and said that the government has not let everyone down, even under very difficult circumstances associated with China's suppression of Taiwan.

"We all see that China has become more overbearing recently," Tsai said, citing Beijing's demand that international airlines change their designation of Taiwan, its forced cancellation of the East Asian Youth Games, and its pressure on Taiwanese actress Vivian Sung (宋芸樺) to apologize for naming Taiwan as her favorite country.

However hard China has tried to pressure Taiwan, Tsai said, her administration has stood steadfast against the pressure, adding that her handling of the situation has garnered support for Taiwan from the international community.
