Former vice president leaves for China visit

Taipei, July 12 (CNA) Former Vice President and Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan (連戰), traveling at the head of a delegation of more than 50 people, departed Thursday for a nine-day visit to China, during which he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平).

Lien promised reporters at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport that he will report on the details of his visit upon his return to Taiwan.

He is scheduled to meet with Xi in Beijing Friday, after which he will deliver a speech at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, where a forum jointly hosted by a cross-Taiwan Strait peace foundation affiliated with Lien's office and a research center that studies cross-strait relations will take place.

Later that evening, Lien will meet with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang (汪洋) at a dinner reception, according to a press release from Lien's office.

Lien will also travel to Shenyang, Jilin and Hangzhou before returning to Taiwan July 20.
